Who We Are
Jem, the owner of Baan Thai, opened her restaurant in 2015. She and her family work hard to make the customer's dining experience a happy one. Known for her exceptional customer service, Jem and her family will make you feel right at home. That's why her loyal customers call her "The Gem of Covington". Baan Thai's cuisine is non-GMO, non-MSG, and only fresh, quality ingredients are used.
What Makes Thai Food Unique
Thai food is internationally known for its intricate flavor combinations. The guiding principle behind good Thai food is harmony - using sweet, salty, bitter, sour and spicy flavors. It is a blend between centuries-old Western and Eastern influences which makes it into something uniquely Thai. Thai food varies from region to region. For instance, in the north and northeast, they prefer sticky rice to steamed rice. The Central region food can be described as sweet and sour, salty and hot. In the North, the food is never sweet but often salty and sour and can be both hot and mild. In the Northeast region, the food is referred to as hot, sour and salty. In the South, the food is renowned for being sour, salty and very hot. Rice is one of Thailand’s primary staples and is usually served with every meal. It can be served with fried vegetables, curries and soups. Some basic ingredients tend to include shrimp paste, fermented fish sauce, fresh coriander leaf, lemongrass, lime juice, chilies, garlic, coconut milk, ginger, tamarind juice, grounded peanuts, and black pepper. The dishes in a Thai meal are served all together permitting diners to enjoy complementary combinations of different tastes. Thai food is generally eaten with a fork and spoon. The spoon is used to convey the food to the mouth. The knife is usually unnecessary because the food is cut into bite-sized pieces before cooking. Thai food is ideally a communal affair involving two or more people sharing several dishes. Each diner has its own dish of rice to which they add from the shared dishes. Spicy dishes are “balanced” by bland dishes to avoid discomfort. The ideal Thai meal is a harmonious blend of the spicy, the subtle, the sweet and sour and is meant to be equally satisfying to the eye, nose, and palate. The meal would be followed by sweet desserts or fresh fruits.
